Uber rape case: NRI woman can file case via email

NEW DELHI: The NRI woman, Nidhi Shah, who had tweeted that Shiv Kumar Yadav had constantly stared at her in the rearview mirror when she had boarded his cab while visiting India in November, on Thursday responded to the email sent by Delhi Police requesting for a few days to seek legal opinion before registering a complaint.

Cops said a case under Section 509 of IPC (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) will be registered once they receive a formal complaint from Shah. “At first, the woman expressed her inability to come to India and register a case, but we told her that she could email us her statement and a case would be registered on its basis,” said a police officer.

DCP north, Madhur Verma, who is in touch with the New Jersey-based woman through Twitter, will tell her the sections under which the case will be registered against the accused.
